Mindfulness in Leadership: Transforming Workplaces Through Presence

Written by Catherine Koverola, PhD

Mindfulness has certainly come into the mainstream. Whether it’s in medicine, education, business, law, the military, or government, mindfulness is being explored in virtually every sector of society.

As mindfulness is increasingly embraced in these spaces, particularly at work, I often hear people express apprehension about it. Some believe that mindfulness has to do with “emptying your mind” or that mindfulness is a bit of a “religious experience.” To those who are apprehensive, I would offer the framing that being mindful is about “being present.”

And, for me, mindfulness is not just about being present for yourself but also–and perhaps even more importantly–for those in your community, whether that be your family, friends, colleagues, students, or neighbors.

In the hustle of our fast paced society, we are often preoccupied with “doing” in contrast to “being.” It’s when we get caught up in doing that we react, and not always in a positive way. When you shift from a place of “doing” to one of “being,” you are more likely to take the time to understand the Other and respond with compassion over judgment.

In terms of mindful leadership at work, I believe it’s really about being present for those you lead. As I increasingly embraced a practice of mindfulness in my personal life, I encouraged community practice of mindfulness with colleagues. It is almost startling to see the impact this has on attitudes and approaches to discussions, particularly concerning the always-unavoidable contentious issues.

The sense of mutual respect engendered when everyone comes together in a moment of mindfulness is palpable. “Being present” is how we can do our most noble work together.
