The Importance of Pausing in Higher Education Leadership

Written by Catherine Koverola, PhD

Like most leaders in higher education today, I often think about the rapidly changing landscape we're all facing. The pressure to fix problems and come forward with strategic solutions is undeniably intense.

That ever-familiar ping (or whatever new sound I’ve most recently selected for my electronic devices!) constantly alerts me to another email, text, or call that demands a response. And it’s usually not just a yes or no answer, or a simple “do I approve or disapprove?”

The problems in higher education are complex and nuanced, and they change just as rapidly as we figure them out. I find that just as I get my arms wrapped around an issue, there’s a new twist. Whether it’s AI, the need for a new metric, or a new call for accountability, there’s always something.

So how does one maintain hope and optimism while navigating this ever-shifting field? I’ve been endeavoring to respond with intentionality.

There is that seemingly undeniable reflex to react immediately, but rather than giving into this pressure, I have learned the value of intentionally pausing and breathing. Breathing and breathing again. Taking a moment to pause inwardly and reflect opens the door to new possibilities and new ways of cultivating a mindful response.

I have found that just a small, intentional pause releases the intensity of whatever demand is put before me and opens the way for thoughtful discussion and more meaningful strategic planning for solutions. For example, before logging into yet another zoom call, I take a brief moment to pause, which can make all the difference.

Taking it a step further, you can invite your colleagues to start meetings with a moment of mindful reflection. It’s a way of signaling to ourselves and one another that we are present in this moment for the work ahead.

It’s about being present with yourself or together with colleagues for one brief moment in a rapidly changing landscape.
